Promising Indian shuttler PV Sindhu defeated Zheng Yu of China 22-20,11-21,21-12 in her quarter-final match of the womens singles event to secure a berth in the semi-finals of the Badminton Asia Youth Under-19 Championship in progress at UP Badminton Academy,Lucknow. Sindhu is the fourth seed in the womens singles event. Sameer Verma triumphed in the mens singles event. The Indian beat Guo Kai of China 21-19,12-21,21-15 in the quarter-finals.
With this India has assured itself of two more medals. It had won a bronze in the team championships. In the semi-finals,Sindhu will be facing Sun Yu of China while Sameer will play against Liu Kai (China) in their respective sections.
Talking to The Indian Express,coach of the junior national team Sanjiv Sachdeva said,It has happened for the first time that two Indians have reached the semi-final stage. If Sindhu and Sameer continue to play like this then they will excel in the semi-finals as well. We are quite happy with the team championships bronze and now we want to settle for nothing less than a silver or a gold in the singles event, he added.
In the womens doubles quarter-finals,the pair of Ou Dongni and Xiong Rui of China (seed-2) beat K Maneesha and PV Sindhu and K Maneesha (seed-8) by 21-8,21-9. The Indian challenge came to an end in the mixed doubles as well when Pei Tianyi and Ou Dongni of China beat B Venkatesh and G Ruthvika Shivani 21-11,21-7.
Lu Ching Yao and Huang Chu En of Chiinese Taipei beat the mens doubles top seeds Jor Praveen and Rianto Rangga Yave of Indonesia 21-11,19-21,21-14 in the qaurter-finals of the event.
The semi-final matches begin from 2.00 pm on Friday.
