As doctors strike,5-year-old dies in CSMMU

Five-year-old Sudha died on Monday afternoon, after being admitted to the trauma centre for one day —the day when junior doctors of the Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Medical University were on strike over alleged lack of security in the hospital wards.

Her father,Sobharan Singh,a daily wage earner,is still in shock. With no stretcher available, the child’s mother carried her in her arms and took her out of the hospital.

“She had fever yesterday and we brought her here but no one attended to her,” said Singh, who hails from Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh. “We were asked to bring some medicines last night. That is about all the treatment my daughter received,” wept the mother, cradling the body.

“Nobody told us to go to any other hospital,” Singh said. Earlier, three deaths had been reported due to lack of medical help at the trauma centre. On Monday, patients were either turned away or sent to the wards where they were refused admission.

The junior doctors are not ready to call off the strike. Vice Chancellor Saroj Chooramani, however, claimed that the strike had been called off.
