In a breakthrough in the operation against Naxal groups,the Sonbhadra police on Friday unearthed an illegal arms manufacturing unit in the Naxal-hit area on the states border with Jharkhand.
The unit allegedly provided help to Naxal zonal commander Munna Vishwakarma and his group. Police arrested one of the members from the unit while the kingpin and four others managed to escape into the forest area after the police raid.
The police recovered a countrymade MP-5 sten gun and a carbine,both of .9 mm calibre,three .32 bore revolvers,two .315 bore pistols and cartridges from the place.
Sonbhadra SP Deepak Kumar said: We are carrying out joint combing with Jharkhand Police to trace the kingpin and his associates.
He said the one arrested Pragas alias Prakash of Pipardeeh village under Nagar Utari police station of Gadhwa district in Jharkhand has revealed about the gangs link with Vishwakarma and the area commanders working under his supervision in Rohtas and Bhabhua districts of Bihar and Gadhwa district. Kumar also said the expertise of the group could be gauged from the fact that they had manufactured the MP-5 sten gun which has recently arrived in India.
Pragas told police that they had expertise in repairing all kinds of the sophisticated weapons including A-K series rifles,self-loading rifles (SLRs) and foreign-make small weapons of all calibres.
Pragas was earlier arrested in 1998 and 2006 and also in 2003 for supplying arms and ammunition to local criminals,the SP said.
