A day after reports of students raising their voice against the authorities at St Xavier’s College, the college administration clarified that there were no protests in the college and things were blown out of proportion.

Some students resented the decision of the college to hold back their admit cards but there were no protests, said a college official. Vice-Principal Fr Jimmy Keepuram, however, made it clear that there would be no compromise in allowing students with less than the required percentage to appear for the examination.

“We are very particular in maintaining college discipline, and we make it clear to every student at the very beginning and thus no consideration would be made,” said Fr Keepuram.

On Tuesday students with less percentage of attendance were denied admit cards. College authorities said the students are fully aware that the college follows the Calcutta University’s criteria of at least 60 per cent attendance.

College authorities said on Tuesday confusion was caused as a number of students both from first and second year came to collect their admit cards. As majority of the students have been barred to appear in the examination because of low attendance

in environmental studies, the college authorities are taking a flexible stand on the issue.

The college has arranged for a special environmental studies class for them on April 30. The college administration pointed out that only 15 classes were held on the subject owing to several holidays during this session. After the classes scheduled on April 30 the students are supposed to meet the vice-principal who will decide on the further course of action.
