World-class faculty needed for Presidency’s upgradation: Bose

The mentor group of the Presidency University on Friday identified recruiting world-class faculty as the biggest challenge for upgradation of the university.

The mentor group of the Presidency University on Friday identified recruiting world-class faculty as the biggest challenge for upgradation of the university.

Five members of the mentor group led by Professor Sugato Bose,Gardiner professor of History Harvard University,on Friday visited different departments of the Presidency University and interacted with faculty members and students.

“In many departments,they talked about faculty crunch. We have to recruit world-class faculty,” said Bose. Incidentally,the newly set up university has over 100 posts of faculty lying vacant and the university has proposed to create more than 200 new posts for the university.

Being a state university,the institution has limited resources and hence it will be challenge for its recruit the world-class faculty.

“There is a space crunch and the entire academic infrastructure from libraries to laboratories need an upgrade,” Bose said.

Isher Judge Ahluwalia,chairperson of Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations,and wife of Deputy Chairperson of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia,who was also part of the visiting team,said,“Everybody wants a change … There is a lot of enthusiasm among the students.”

The other members of the team were Himadri Pakrasi,director of International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability (I-CARES),University of Washington,Ashoke Sen,a physicist and Swapan Chakraborty,director of National Library. The mentor group also met the representatives of the university’s council.
