Its astonishing how JK Rowlings limber voice manages to move effortlessly between Rons adolescent sarcasm and Harrys growing solemnity in David Yates interpretation of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Her voice seeps through the brilliant tapestry of images that the film is,and steers it from spates of youthful exuberance to more philosophical gravity. In doing so it saves the film from the dreaded fate of being just a visual tour-de force. Indeed,The Half Blood Prince, more than any other Potter films, marks Harrys final initiation into the complexities and heartbreaks of adulthood.
Daniel Radcliffe as Harry seems more reconciled to his destiny as a leader, coping with the expectations and duties of his role. He accepts it with a delightful mix of stoic resolution and cheekiness (in one scene he proclaims that he is the chosen one only to be whacked by Hermione). Obviously,David Yates, had the larger picture in mind when he decided to do away with a sub-plot here and a seemingly crucial duel scene there. The Half Blood Prince primarily wants to dwell in Harrys mind as he decides to embrace his destiny. It wants to establish him as more of a Macbeth than a conflicted Hamlet.
In the process,David Yates reveals himself as an extraordinarily gifted director who manages to capture the mood of the novel. Harry and his friends inhabit a dark, inky world here, stony walls and spiraling gates heighten the sense of foreboding. He also manages to lend a sense of claustrophobic gravity to the pensieve scenes where a young Tom Riddle is shown in decidedly monochromatic hues to bring forward the evil in him. Also interesting is his restrained treatment of the crucial Snape-Dumbledore climax sceneinstead of dwelling on it,Yates rushes through the proceeding in dizzying pace.
But that doesnt mean that Yates has done away with the lighter moments. There is quidditch and the much-talked about Hermoine-Ron love intrigue is dealt with clinical precision (so much so that you are left wondering if Yates actually disapproves of the match). Enough screen time is devoted to the love angle between Ginny and Harry. Hormones run free in Hogwarts and every corner has a couple snogging. Amidst all this are Harry,Hermione and Ron,participators in prototypical tale of love and heartbreak.
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince as a film, embodies JK Rowlings achievement with the Potter books. It manages to make Harry both a familiar adolescent coping with the banal frustrations of school and dating and an epic hero, kin to everyone from the young King Arthur to Spider-Man.
