Violence again in Junglemahal,TMC worker killed

After almost six months,Junglemahal saw political violence again early Saturday morning when a Trinamool Congress worker was hacked to death in front of his house in Belpahari.

After almost six months,Junglemahal saw political violence again early Saturday morning when a Trinamool Congress worker was hacked to death in front of his house in Belpahari. A known Trinamool activist of this area on the West Midnapore-Bankura border,Shyamal Saha was killed by unknown miscreants.

After three years of bloodshed,Junglemahal is struggling to return to normalcy.

Saha’s family members told the police that he was called out of his house at around 4 am by three persons carrying blunt weapons and then hacked to death. While the family believes the men were CPM cadres and targeted Saha for being among the few Trinamool leaders here, senior police officials are not ruling out the possibility of a Maoist attack.

The Barshol village to which Saha belonged was dominated by Maoists till the state Assembly elections saw Trinamool come to power. Since Belpahari is near the border with Jharkhand, the Maoists continue to find their way into the area with ease.

A senior police official said,“After preliminary investigation,it seems Shyamal Saha was murdered due to political rivalry. His family members have claimed that he was killed by the CPM cadres. The village is controlled by CPM and Saha was the only TMC activist in the village.”

A couple of days ago, senior police officials, including state DGP Naparajit Mukherjee, had visited Jhargram in West Midnapore and attended a programme in which seven Maoists surrendered before the DGP.
