Chowrasta is Anjan Dutt’s tribute to two most important influences in his life,Satyajit Ray films and Darjeeling

There are many who think Kanchenjunga was one of Satyajit Ray’s best work. Anjan Dutt professes to be one of them. “I loved the way Ray handled his characters and the way he used the location. Any filmmaker would be proud of such a film,” says Dutt. Which is probably why Dutt took his camera and crew to Darjeeling to recreate the Kanchenjunga magic in his latest presentation Chowrasta. “It’s a film shot on location which talks about the place as much as the characters. I wanted to capture the spirit of Darjeeling,” says Dutt.

Narrating the crisscrossing tales of eight people — a terrorist on the run,an aging Bollywood star who meets her ex-husband,an eloped couple who come for a honeymoon to the hill station only to realise that their marriage was mismatched, and a tea planter —the film raises pertinent questions. “I have talked about the problems that plague the beautiful hill place today. The Gorkhaland issue is an important one and rarely has this issue been talked about in cinema,” he says.

Chowrasta is also a very personal film for Dutta. “I’ve spent my formative years there. Some of my best memories are associated with the place,” he says. Darjeeling institutions like Gleanery’s and Keventers will figure prominently in the film. “It’s my tribute to Darjeeling,” smiles Dutt.
