Two more accused arrested

A day before the Criminal Investigation Department is supposed to submit its status report on the investigation of the Netai massacre before the Calcutta High Court,the department today arrested two accused in the case — Abani Singha and Ashwani Chalak.

A day before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is supposed to submit its status report on the investigation of the Netai massacre before the Calcutta High Court,the department today arrested two accused in the case — Abani Singha and Ashwani Chalak.

The duo,CPM’s local committee members,were arrested from Midnapore bus stand. The CID would file a status report tomorrow on the progress of the investigation into Netai killing,in which nine villagers were gunned down on January 7.

Niraj Narayan Pande,Inspector General,CID,said the accused were on their way to some other place in the morning when they were arrested. Singha,61,is a resident of Sayersai village — near Netai,who had played an active role in recapturing Lalgarh by the CPM — while 30-year-old Ashwani Chalak is a resident of Chunapara village.

They will be produced before the Jhargram court tomorrow,said Pande.

Three persons have been arrested in the case — who were named in the FIR — till now. Another three accused — Joydev Giri,and Tapan Dey,CPM zonal committee members,Binpur,Fullora Mondal,CPM district committee member — are still absconding.

Suven Mondal and Naba Gopal Sanki were earlier arrested by the Lalgarh police on Januray 8.

According to a source in the CID,Singha and Chalak were the prime accused in the massacre who had allegedly opened fire on the villagers. The duo were the key persons to set up the camp in the house of Dhandapat in the second week of December.
