Two days after the Burdwan train incident, when a gang of robbers had allegedly looted passengers and raped one of the commuters, state police conducted massive raids at Katwa and Ketugram and arrested two from Katwa. The duo – Sentu Sheikh and Noor Md,both in their late twenties – was produced at the Katwa Court and was remanded to seven days police custody by AK Sarkar,ACGM. The police have been specifically instructed not to subject the accused to any physical or mental torture.

The victim’s statement was taken today and although a case of robbery and rape had been started, these two have been booked for robbery. Tushar Halder,OC,GRP,today officially requested the court to hand over the case to West Bengal Police. Police sources said it was done because of the inadequate infrastructure of railway police.

“We have information that the other members of the gang belonged to Salar area of Murshidabad district and Birbhum. If these two are interrogated and their mobile phone calls are tracked, the others can be traced down,” said an official.

On February 25,a gang of robbers boarded a passenger train, posing as commuters and in Katwa,Burdwan, looted passengers and allegedly raped a resident of Ambalpur,at Ambalgram Station.
