Trinamool turns model code into a weapon

Of the many weapons it plans to use against the CPM in the coming Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress is giving special importance to violations of the Model Code of Conduct.

Of the many weapons it plans to use against the CPM in the coming Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress is giving special importance to violations of the Model Code of Conduct.

The model code came into force from March 1,when the dates of the six-phase elections were declared by the Chief Election Commissioner in New Delhi.

The code imposes several restrictions on the functionaries of political parties — one of them being that no financial decisions benefiting the voters in any manner can be taken.

“We have decided to pay special attention to the matter and expose how they (the CPM) do not care about any government norms, even the ones designed by the Election Commission,” said party MLA Madan Mitra.

Since March 2,the EC office is being flooded with complaints on MCC violation, mostly by Trinamool against the ruling party.

On March 2,a complaint was brought against the state finance minister Asim Dasgupta for signing files late into the evening of March 1 after the election dates were announced and the model code imposed.

On March 3,complaints were brought against environment minister Sailen Sarkar for allegedly distributing cycles in his constituency,Malda, and state tourism Minister Manab Mukherjee for using red beacon lights on his car.

On March 4,the Trinamool complained that some members of the Left-backed Democratic Youth Federation of India were campaigning over loudspeakers about a forthcoming spectacles-distribution event by the Sundarban Affairs Minister Kanti Ganguly at Nalua village in the South 24 Parganas.

Officials said an Election Monitoring cell of the Trinamool has been forced, which is going to be headed by Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy.

Small committees have been formed in every booth area. The committee members have been specially instructed to notice every small move made by the CPM and bring even the smallest violations to the notice of Roy.

About five new television sets have been bought at the Trinamool office at Kalighat,as well as the party headquarters at Topsia.

“This has been done to monitor all news channels simultaneously,” said Mitra. “We are checking that no advertorial of the state government is being telecast.”

He said Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee has specially instructed core committee members like Madan Mitra,Mukul Roy,Partha Chatterjee and Subrata Baksi to keep special watch for model code violation by the Left parties.
