‘To survive,Left needs to change’

Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary A B Bardhan on Monday sought a ‘change’ in the functioning of the Left Front in Bengal to help the front battle out the crisis it was passing through after its humiliating defeat in the Assembly polls in the state.

Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary A B Bardhan on Monday sought a ‘change’ in the functioning of the Left Front in Bengal to help the front battle out the crisis it was passing through after its humiliating defeat in the Assembly polls in the state.

Criticising the unilateral functioning of the Front’s constituents,Bardhan who was speaking to media persons at the end of the two-day state council meeting of the CPI,said,“The Left must take decisions in a collective way. Several of the CPM policies, during its rule, proved disastrous in the long run.”

The party reviewed its dismal performance in the recent Assembly elections and also deliberated upon the future course of action.

Reacting to the price hike in petro-products,Bardhan said the party might give a ‘bandh’ call against the ‘vicious ‘ designs of the UPA government. He slammed the Central government of patronising corruption and shielding the guilty ministers. Bringing back the Bofors issue,Bardhan said the present-day scams have overshadowed them all.

The CPI general secretary welcomed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s decision to waive Rs 16 on the price of LPG cylinders but said the decision was just ‘tokenism’ and hardly addressed the issue.

He also appealed the CM to speak to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and ask him to roll back the hike on all petroleum products.
