Kolkata:TMC Yuva leader Amit Singh allegedly assaulted a traffic sergeant who was posted at Judges Court crossing in Alipore on Wednesday. Anuj Chakladar,the traffic sergeant,stopped two bikers for not wearing helmets. However,the bikers asked the sergeant to leave them saying they were TMC leaders. When Chakladar refused to oblige,the bikers called 10 to 12 youths by making calls from their cellphones and assaulted the sergeant. Chakladar later lodged an FIR. One of the bikers was identified as Amit Singh,a TMC yuva leader. Singh is absconding.
Starvation deaths: NHRC seeks report
New Delhi:The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday sought a report from West Bengal government in connection with the allegations of starvation deaths in tea estates of the state. The panel issued the notice asking the state Chief Secretary to submit the report within four weeks in connection with the deaths of two women and a child in Jalpaiguri tea estate earlier this month. NHRC spokesperson said media report alleged that the workers were yet to get 62-week ration and two-month wages.
Youth beaten to death for theft
Jalpaiguri:An unidentified youth was beaten to death by some people at Sadar Hospital compound in Jalpaiguri on late Tuesday night on the suspicion that he had stolen cellphone. On being informed about the incident,police rushed to the spot and admitted the youth in the hospital but he died.
