‘Why target my wife for stadium chaos?’: TMC MLA Raj Chakraborty slams trolls, files complaint, defends Tollywood actor Subhashree

‘Had she been a well-known Bollywood personality, would the narrative have been the same?’ he asked in a statement

Tollywood actor Subhashree Ganguly’s husband, director-producer and Trinamool Congress MLA Raj Chakraborty, has filed a formal complaint at Titagarh police station, alleging that his wife has been subjected to harassment and abusive trolling on social media since Saturday. The complaint was submitted on Sunday.

According to Chakraborty, the harassment began after Subhashree posted a photograph with football legend Lionel Messi during his visit to Kolkata. The post drew widespread online trolling, linking her presence at the event to the chaos that erupted at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium).

“Subhashree is being personally attacked. This is highly condemnable. I cannot disclose against whom the complaint has been filed right now, as it would hamper the investigation,” Chakraborty said. Asked whether he had sought additional security for his wife, the ruling party MLA said, “I am enough for Subhashree’s security.”

Chakraborty said he sympathised with football fans who were unable to see Messi despite buying expensive tickets, but condemned attempts to target his wife. “What happened surrounding Messi’s presence at the Yuvabharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) is certainly reprehensible. I also sympathize with those who could not see the star footballer even after buying tickets worth thousands of rupees. But I am angry and annoyed with those who are unnecessarily stirring up trouble about the matter from home, spreading hatred on social media, and personally attacking my wife.”

He also took aim at political leaders who questioned Subhashree’s presence at the event.

“Some political leaders have directly said, ‘Subhashree is an actress. What was the need for her to go to the field!’ Perhaps one cannot speak to someone like that. If he watches the World Cup, I could also tell him, he is a politician. What is the need to watch the World Cup? But I will not say it like that.”

The MLA alleged that the harassment was being fuelled by political provocation and had a clear gender angle. “If Subhashree were not a woman, perhaps she would not have been subjected to so much harassment. It is not just Subhashree; the same thing would have happened to any other actress from Tollywood in her place.”

In a detailed statement, Chakraborty said, “The chaos at Yuva Bharati Krirangan yesterday was completely uncalled for and truly painful. It was an insult to football and to football-loving Bengalis… I sincerely hope those responsible are held accountable. Had she been a well-known Bollywood personality, would the narrative have been the same?

He added that Subhashree’s only “crime” was posting a photograph with Messi and questioned why her profession was being used to single her out. “Does being an actress disqualify her from being a Messi fan? A person carries multiple identities shaped by gender, profession, and relationships… Above all, she is a human being.”

Chakraborty said dragging Subhashree’s identity, family and child into public criticism crossed all limits. “Those who are trolling must remember that how they treat a person, especially a woman, will leave a lasting imprint… There is a vast difference between protest and humiliation.”

Stressing that Subhashree had no connection with the stadium chaos, he said she too was deeply hurt by what had unfolded. “The chaos that occurred yesterday… has absolutely no connection with Subhashree. Like all of you, she had also gone there to see a footballing legend.”

He ended his statement with a personal note addressed to his wife: “You are a woman with a voice and hence, by definition a strong woman. And I know how strong you are. I love you, my wife. No matter where life takes us, I promise to always stand by your side.”

A police official confirmed that a case has been registered based on Chakraborty’s complaint. “We are probing all allegations,” the official said.
