The Things They Do

Cheap suit, cigar dangling from the lips and a wad of other people’s money in their hand, fed on Hollywood band movies (remember That Thing You Do and Dreamgirls?) that’s how most of us would picture a band manager if at all we came across such a term even about a few years ago.

Fast forward a few years, and you are introduced to Mrinalini Sen. She doesn’t exactly dress cheaply, and even if she does smoke cigarettes she doesn’t believe in making a show of it. This 20 something youngsters debunks the “band manager” stereotype and how. “When I was introduced to the music of Supersonics,I was quite impressed. I wanted to spread the word about them. I met them personally and it was decided that I should be their band manage,” she says. Sen has been with Supersonics for more than a year and as a band manager her work entails “arranging gigs, maintaining relationships with the people of the business, negotiating media, answering emails and stuff”. Sen is a part of a very small group of professionals in the city who spend an incredible amount of time and energy promoting their bands. Says Pranaadhika Sinha, who has managed two very popular city-based bands in the past—“One needs to understand the band inside out to promote them. One needs to invest emotionally on them.”

By now it must be clear that most band managers are not thief-like Svengalis. By and large they’re hard-working people from all walks of life, with a passion for music and a respect for artists. But the problem in a city like Kolkata is how to find one of these managers — someone who has the drive,if not the experience,to nurture your career?

“That’s the primary reason why we haven’t recruited a band manager yet. We haven’t found anyone who feels for our music and relates to it inherently,” says Neel Adhikari of the city-based band,Five Little Indians

Thankfully, for another very popular city band,Insomnia, that has never been a problem. Rahul Mehra, their band manager,is seen as a member of the band and not just an aid. “I have been with them for ages. I’m not only their manager,I am their style and image consultant rolled into one,” laughs Mehra. In fact, such is the camaraderie between Insomnia band members and Mehra that other band managers of the city swear by them. “Insomnia has the ideal band manager. They share a perfect relationship,” says Sinha.

Yet,it cannot be denied that Kolkata band managers have a long way to go before they can match the standards of Brian Epstein of Beatles. “The band scene in Kolkata is still in its nascent stage. We don’t really have any proper standards to live up to. First we need to create the requisite infrastrucrure,” says Mehra. Moreover, band members need to be be clear early on about where they could use some help. “One doesn’t really need to seek help from professionals. Look at the people around you — can any of them offer you that help? If so,why not ask them,” says Sen. But more importantly, claims Mehra,a manager needs to love and appreciate the music of an artist, but they also need to be able to tell them the truth.
