You need to meet Sahana Goswami to realize that the celebrity culture of Bollywood is not what it used to be. Yes there are the divas and the sycophant-surrounded,court-case fighting,gum-chewing,accent-sporting superstars but relief comes in the form of the likes of Goswami who is more than comfortable in the skin. The industry is so much bigger now and its more open to new people new faces. Today, you dont have to be an absolute stunner to be on screen, claims Goswami whose turn as the acid-tongued wife of Arjun Rampal in Rock On won her instant recognition. In Kolkata to promote her latest film,Jashnn at an even in Cinemax,Goswami tells us what makes Bollywood work for her.
What are you doing in Jashnn?
Jashnn is about this young guys rise to stardom and I happen to be a major stumbling block in his life. I play
Adhyayans (Suman) elders sister who is very protective about her brother who is in an emotionally abusive relationship with an older man. My character is neurotic and fluctuates between extremes.
You are one of the most interesting actors in Bollywood right now. You dont fit into the conventional heroine mould, yet you manage to steal the show. Are you afraid of being typecast?
Im trying my best not to be typecast. I have consciously chosen to be a part of different genres of cinema. I want to act in a musical,a swashbuckling action thriller and the works. I am lucky that people have appreciated my craft and I need to respect that. This is why Im branching out to try out new things.
Tell us something about your background.
Well,Im a probashsi Bengali who was brought up in Delhi. I completed my school education there and then went to Sophia College to pursue a degree in literature
Which means you are an outsider in the industry?
Am I? The industry is full of outsiders today. Mumbai is full of young strugglers trying to mark in different vocations. More so,the film industry.
Does that mean that film stars today are much more accessible? Do you have to wear a burkha if you want to have pani puri in Chowpatty?
No I dont. Actually, today the industry is such a big place that almost everyone in Mumbai has a friend or a relative working with the film industry. Of course, stars do get mobbed but there is a distinct difference in attitude.
What are you future projects?
Im a part of Sudhir Mishras Ab Tera Kya Hoga Johnny, which stars Neil Nitin Mukesh,Soha Ali Khan and Kay Kay Menon too. Im looking forward to Vinay Shuklas next which is an episodic film and has Konkona (Sen Sharma) and Raima (Sen) as my co-stars.
