Thai Trail

If there's any cuisine that Calcutta has taken to after chowmein and biryani,it has to be Thai.

A Thai food festival in the city helps you tell between dishes from the four corners of the country

If there’s any cuisine that Calcutta has taken to after chowmein and biryani,it has to be Thai. And Benjarong,in the South City Mall,is where all the action is this winter. On the occasion of Loy Krathong,a festival held on the full moon day of the 12th month in the Thai traditional lunar calendar, the restaurant has organised a food festival.

“The festival is all about authentic food from across Thailand. There is a distinct difference in the cuisines of Northern,Central and Southern Thailand. We have tried to replicate that as authentically as possible, keeping in mind the Indian taste buds,” said Pranab Chakrobarty, the Managing Director of the restaurant.

Of the 40 exotic dishes on offer in the festival special menu,a few like Tom Song Grong soup,Pla Hor Baitey,Tohu Che and Hor Mok Pla have been specially recommended by the chef. An lunch or dinner can be started off with Tom Som Groog,a traditional Thai prawn soup flavoured with a hint of tamarind juice and Pla Hor Baitey,a non-vegetarian starter consisting of diced Basa fish marinated in Thai spices, which are wrapped in pandanus leaves and then fried.

Of the various items in the main course, one should make it a point not to miss Tohu Che,a preparation made from fried tofu with tri-coloured pepper and water chestnuts in black bean sauce,Pla Kapong Nung Siew Khing (steamed red snapper in ginger and red soya bean sauce) and Hor Mok Pla (steamed curried fish in banana leaf). Yum Dokmai Tod,a non-spicy salad consisting of crispy fried edible flowers served with tangy ‘nam yang dressing,’ can be had along with the meal,to neutralize the spicy effect of the Thai food. The perfect dessert to complete this perfect meal could be Ngor Lychee Krati Sod,lychees stuffed with pineapple and then served in coconut milk.

With comfortable seating arrangements, soothing lighting and excellent service,Benjarong is the place to be for Thai food lovers. A meal for two approximately costs Rs. 900.
