Suspected polio case tests negative

The suspected case of polio in South 24-Parganas has turned out to be a false alarm.

Kolkata: The suspected case of polio in South 24-Parganas has turned out to be a false alarm. Eighteen-month-old Sumi Naskar,a resident of Baruipur,who reportedly had polio-like symptoms,tested negative.

The Press Information Bureau today sent a letter saying that stool samples collected from her on and March 13 and 14 were found to be negative by Institute of Serology,Kolkata. WHO officials also confirmed that the child was suffering from Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP).

Sumi had been admitted in Baruipur subdivisional hospital after she developed floppiness in her legs. Tension gripped the hospital as she was suspected to have polio. Dr Asit Biswas,spokesperson for the health and family welfare department,said the girl is recovering and will be released from hospital soon.

In 2012,9,000 cases were investigated by the National Polio Surveillance Program with the support of local health authorities. All stool samples of the AFP cases tested negative for polio.
