While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was promising a university status at the St Xavier’s College convocation,a number of youths were seen on Short Street, outside the back gate, equipped with gadgets like bluetooth-enabled phones and laptops. Not expecting Didi to come out any sooner, they were in a hurry to be the first ones to put up her speech,ad verbatim,on various social networking sites and upload the video of the CM’s speech on Youtube.

“It’s simply hilarious. You should see the number of hits one can get within half an hour of putting it up. Our CM rocks,” said a teenager, who, when asked by security personnel, said he was waiting for the cultural programme that followed the event.

One out of a group of four, aged between 19 and 23,standing near the college, said,“Some of our friends are students of the college and have promised us the video. If that doesn’t happen,we are even ready to pay for a good quality video.”

Mamata Banerjee’s speeches and videos have been making the rounds for quite sometime thanks to her pronunciation, goof ups and grammatical bloomers. “Our favourite is her addressing Rahul Dravid. You can look up Youtube if you want,” giggled a girl in her early twenties, outside the campus.

There were several who waited to see if Mamata would read out a pre-written speech as the function was that of a premier educational institution. But the unfazed CM,after a brief stumble in the beginning, continued with her “the Father Felix Raj,” “…Bengal can shows the way to the world that we are the number one…,” and “…it was my memorable day. I like it.”
