Dibakar Banerjee wants more red on his leading lady. So he excuses himself and asks his assistant to do the needful. At the other end of the phone I imagine a make up man smearing some rouge on the cheek of an umbrella-shaded heroine, but Banerjee clarifies. I am colour grading Love Sex Aur Dhokha. Its the process of digitally enhancing the colour of an image, explains Banerjee.
Which means the Khosla Ka Ghosla director is all set with his latest film, the rather provocatively-titled Love Sex Aur Dhokha. It will release later this month and I am quite excited about it. Its quite unlike anything I have done before, he says. Our conversation is interrupted again. Banerjee want some more changes instructions are given in an efficient tone but in a language totally alien to my untrained ear (dichroic,CRT etc). He apologises and resumes the conversation, not betraying any kind of irritation. Clearly, the three-film old Banerjee is one one cool customer. After Khosla Ka Ghosla, people started calling me a director in the Hrishikesh Mukherjee mould. But Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! changed the perception. Love Sex Aur Dhokha is as different from Oye Lucky as it was from Khosla Ka Ghosla , says Banerjee.
He describes his latest film as an exploration of the society. LSD talks about voyeurism, but also about the way our society reacts to news and entertainment today. Its about the way we derive vicarious pleasure out of other peoples lives but it also questions the viewers responsibility, says Banrejee. Using MMS clips-like footages,Love Sex Aur Dhokha talks about a few lives. I want to find out how a moment of intimacy, when taken out of context, acquires a totally different meaning, says Banrejee, obviously referring to different MMS scandals that have invaded our drawing rooms.
When he discussed the film with producer Ekta Kapoor, she was totally taken in by the idea. But when she saw the rushes of the film,Ekta, claims Banerjee, was shocked. When Ekta saw the film she wasnt so much shocked by the content as the treatment and format. Ive shot the film on a digital format with a hand-held camera. So Ektas first question was,Why is the camera shaking so much? Her second question was,Who is going to watch this film? Frankly I had answers for both the questions. But Ektas initial reaction of shock remains. She doesnt really believe that such an unusual and shocking film is viable. But she sees me as this nice sweet seemingly harmless Bengali guy who cant deliberately do anything wrong. Shes indulging me. See,normally the digital format is used by a filmmaker for the lack of choices. But for Love Sex Aur Dhokha the digital format was the only choice, says Banerjee.
