Senior Nari Morcha leader held

In the last one and a half months,1,068 Morcha leaders and supporters were arrested.

Although the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has withdrawn the indefinite strike and suspended the agitation programme till October 20,the state government continues with the crackdown on its leaders,workers and supporters in the hills.

A senior Nari Morcha leader and a GTA member,Urmila Rumba,was arrested on Saturday in a pending case,said a senior police official. Rumba was arrested from the chowk bazaar area in Darjeeling over the case of blocking the national highway.

In the last one and a half months,1,068 Morcha leaders and supporters were arrested. Rumba is the secretary of Nari Morcha and the second-in-command in the organisation after Asha Gurung,wife of Bimal Gurung and president of Nari Morcha.

Rumba,a former teacher of Loreto College,was granted bail Saturday evening.

Roshan Giri,general secretary of the GJM,said,“The government is reigning terror in the hills. We have withdrawn the strike and agreed to participate in the tripartite meeting. Despite that,the government continues with the arrests in the old cases. The government has violated the clauses of the GTA

agreement.”
