The top brass of Kolkata police today held two meetings in Writers Buildings following the terror alert sounded late on Wednesday night.
According to intelligence reports passed on to the city Police,Dakshineswar Temple and Kolkata airport could be targeted by terrorists.
This is the strongest alert we have issued in the last 10 months following definite inputs, said a senior intelligence official. We have specific inputs that two terrorist outfits,including Indian Mujahideen,might strike before the upcoming civic polls to jeopardize the election process, he said.
Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborti said,We have received very specific and strong inputs about the terror threat. Apart from the report given by the state IB,there were some tip-offs from the Central IB also. We have stepped up the security. The specific place mentioned in the report as a target is the airport. We have beefed up security everywhere in the city, Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said after his meeting with the city police chief.
Meanwhile,an unclaimed briefcase was found on a footpath in front of Kenilworth Hotel on Little Russel Street in south Kolkata this morning.
The area was cordoned off and Bomb Disposal Squad with two sniffer dogs reached the spot around 4 pm. After examining,a BDS official said there was something suspicious in briefcase. The briefcase was removed from the area in a disposal van around 5.30 pm.
