Bonny told to appear before ED on March 14 (Express Photo) BENGALI ACTOR Bonny Sengupta has been summoned again by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an ongoing probe into the money laundering aspect of the school recruitment scam. Sengupta was interrogated in two phases on Thursday for more than eight hours in total.
The central agency has asked him to appear before it again on Tuesday.
Sources claimed that Sengupta has been asked to bring a car that he purportedly bought with the money given by Kuntal Ghosh, one of the arrested accused in the recruitment scam.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate has arrested TMC leader Santanu Banerjee for his alleged involvement in teacher recruitment scam after seven hours of questioning, sources claimed on Friday.
According to sources, after Kuntal Ghosh he is the second TMC leader from Hooghly district. However, the agency is yet to issue an official statement confirming the same.
On 21 January year, the ED arrested TMC’s youth leader Kuntal Ghosh in connection with the same case.
The actor’s name came up in connection with the scam after the ED questioned Ghosh on the basis of a few suspicious monetary transfers made by Ghosh. Several of Ghosh’s financial transactions are under the ED’s scanner.
On Thursday, Sengupta told mediapersons, “I did at least 20 events for Kuntal Ghosh for which he paid me Rs 30-45 lakh. He sent the money to help me buy a car. I knew that I may be called for questioning by the ED. I haven’t done anything that could get me arrested. When his name cropped up in the case, it came to my mind that I could be called to join the probe.”
According to sources, Kuntal was planning to make a movie for which he paid some money to the actor in advance. Since the project did not take off, the money was adjusted through several events that Sengupta did for Kuntal Ghosh.
Along with the ED, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of non-teaching staff (Groups C and D), as well as teaching staff by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) and West Bengal Board of Secondary Education between 2014
and 2021.
