Rains fail to deter Puja shoppers

Even the rains have not been able to dampen the mood of Kolkata shoppers,as they throng the shops to get the best of the pre-Puja sales.

Debarati Chakrabarty,a student of Calcutta University busy shopping at the New Market,said,“Rains can never affect the Puja spirit. With the sale on in most shops,one has to make use of the opportunity. Since I have college on weekdays,I can shop only on Sundays,” said Chakrabarty.

The weather has also improved in the last few days,as the maximum temperature was 28.1 Celsius on Sunday,four degrees below normal,with around 25.1 mm of rains in the last 24 hours.

According to the meteorological department,the maximum and minimum temperature is expected to be around 31 degrees Celsius and 27 degree Celsius respectively in the next 48 hours. Heavy rainfall is expected over north Bengal in places like Cooch Behar,Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri.

The trough of low pressure from North-West to East-Central Bay of Bengal now extends from North to East-Central Bay of Bengal.

With the weather predictions remaining pleasant for the next two days,shopkeepers are eyeing major sales. S Islam,a shopkeeper in New Market,said,“The puja crowd has been good with the weather becoming pleasant.”

Rs 2,500 and expects his sales picking up in the next few days.

Radheshyam Das,another shopkeeper in New Market,said,“The rains did not play a spoilsport as people had a weekend off and they all took the opportunity to come down and shop. I sold shoes worth Rs 1,500 in the last two days.”
