As the Lok Sabha election candidates sweat it out in the heat and dust to woo voters,Gen X and ever-expanding Internet community have set the cyber world at fire with canvassing and animated debates.
Pre-election polls, asking members to predict the winners in different constituencies, have begun doing the rounds on several popular social networking sites. Vote for Md Salim, says an Orkut community that is running a poll to predict the winning candidate from the Kolkata North, where CPMs Mohammad Salim is pitted against Sudip Bandyopadhyay of the Trinamool. The community, formed on March 29,already has six members. Eight votes have so far been cast, all in favour of Mohammad Salim.
Another community is canvassing for Sujan Chakraborty of the CPM and hosts another such poll between him and Kabir Suman (Trinamool),with the latter having won all votes polled so far.
With less than a month to go for the polls, social networking sites are abuzz with views posted by urban youths. Topics of discussion include West Bengal er lokshobar sombhabbyo fol ki hobe? (What is the possible result of the Lok Sabha Polls in West Bengal?).
These cyber psephologists have their own predictions. Bashirhat TMC pabe na. O seat ta CPI contest korche bohudin dhore. Okhane CPI jete…. (TMC wont win Bashirhat. CPI has been winning that seat for several elections….) writes a member of the community.
There is a virtual deluge of posts on almost all topics, with vigorous debates raging round-the-clock. Prominent among the issues are Singur and Nandigram, while Mamata Banerjee and the 32-year uninterrupted rule by the Left Front government in West Bengal also invite a great deal of debate.
Didi tomar supporter ra baarche (didi, your supporters are increasing in number),writers a member of a community titled Mamata Banerjee. Tumi sobar bhalo karte chao kintu tomai sobai bhul bojhe. Kintu ekdin manusher ei bhul bhangbe (You want to help the people but you are often misunderstood. One day people will realise their mistake),says a member of a community titled Mamata Banerjee fan club.
While most of these groups discuss poll-related issues, some have been set up specifically to canvass for candidates. Internet-savvy contestants like Salim are present on most of the social networking sites like Orkut,Facebook and bigadda.com. My friends and well-wishers have formed these communities and groups. I also interact with people through my website and e mails, said Salim.
