The Putiary Club Sarbojanin in South Kolkata is celebrating its 78th year of Durga Puja by conveying a powerful message with the theme ‘Dayboddho’, which means responsibility.

The arrival of Goddess Durga not only brings celebrations but also unites people of all castes, creeds, and religions in festivities. Through this puja pandal, the message conveyed is that every individual has a responsibility towards society, humanity, and the world as a whole.

As the beats of the dhak echo and the pandal glows with vibrant artistry and colour, one sees that there are wall paintings, similar to those of all political parties before elections. One can also see stages set up from which leaders are giving their speeches or waving their party flags. In this pandal, every lamp lit symbolises empathy, and every rhythm resonates with the spirit of unity.

According to the organisers, just like autumn clouds merge into one sky despite their different colours, Durga Puja also reminds people to set aside differences and embrace oneness.

Colour has no religion, no division, although political divisions keep people apart from each other, they say. Without naming any political party, they say that while the individual remains the same, the colour changes; once the person is red, they become green, and then saffron.

Due to the colour difference, there are significant differences, violence, and even bloodshed at times, but before the Goddess Durga, all are the same; all are equal, and there is no wall dividing anyone, they say.

Durga Puja is not just a celebration of joy, lights, or a colourful form of celebration. It is every person’s responsibility towards unity and love. The pandal conveys the message that there is only one colour, representing unity, harmony, and humanity.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Saikat Roychoudhury, secretary, Putiary Club Sarbojanin Durgotsab, said, “Dayabaddha calls upon everyone to shoulder responsibility — toward society, toward friends, and most importantly, toward humanity. For us, it is not just a festival. It is a solemn responsibility — to create a world of love, harmony, and compassion.”
