The Peoples Committee Against Police Atrocities,a tribal body led by Chhatradhar Mahato, has agreed to allow the Central police forces to enter and man the 44 booths in the area with a rider that the government accept their 23-point demand.
The committee also sought the mediation of the EC and a meeting with the state government over the demands. Chief Electoral Officer Debashis Sen said,I cannot comment on their decision ill I receive it in writing.
Tribal leaders announced their decision after a three-hour meeting at Baropelia in Lalgarh on Saturday. We have decided to allow the Central police force to enter Lalgarh and man the booths for 12 hours on the polling day. Policemen from the state will not be allowed, said Mahato.
The committee will soon formally apprise Sen of its decision. The state government must accept our demands and the EC should arrange our meeting with the state government over the issue, added Mahato.
The committee also wants members of the civil society to be present in Lalgarh on the polling day as neutral observers. Armed CPM cadres, backed by the police, are planning to unleash violence during polls, Mahato said.
The CPM leadership said the move will not affect their poll prospects. CPM candidate from Jhargram Polin Behari Baske said,Lalgarh has only two gram panchayats out of 112 in the Jhargram constituency. Jhargram constituency goes to polls on April 30.
