An angry mob went on rampage at Kulti railway station in Burdwan after Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawans allegedly assaulted a mentally-challenged man for travelling in the ladies compartment of a train on Wednesday.
As per the complaint lodged with the Kulti police station by relatives of Kamalakanta Tiwari (32),he was mentally-challenged and with 15 other relatives returning from a marriage in Dhanbad by the Gomo-Burdwan passenger train. Unable to take care of himself,Tiwari was travelling with his female relatives.
At Barakar station,4 km from Kulti,RPF jawans, inspecting the compartment, caught him and beat him up mercilessly before offloading him. While the male relatives got down at Barakar station, women went up to Kulti station and forced the train driver to alight and called locals. The crowd smashed train windows and platform lights before squatting on the rail tracks and stopping the rail traffic.
Locals claimed that police resorted to lathi-charge and fired in the air,but RPF Senior Divisional Security Commissioner (Asansol) Nurul Hoda denied it There was no firing or lathi-charge. Ten males were found to be travelling in the ladies compartment and were asked to alight at Barakar station. While nine followed the RPFs directions,Tiwari slapped a RPF officer twice. Some force had to be used to subdue him, Hoda said.
How could they identify him off hand? His relatives should not have taken law into their hands. They could have lodged a complaint. Rail traffic was held up for two-and-a-half hours and railway property was destroyed. We have arrested four persons, he added.
