Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who on Tuesday met Governor CV Ananda Bose at Raj Bhavan, said that she apprised him of the two finance Bills that may be tabled in the Assembly in the ongoing monsoon session.

Speaking to mediapersons outside the Raj Bhavan, the CM termed the meeting, which lasted for half an hour, a “courtesy visit”.

“As a mark of courtesy, I visited the Governor at the Raj Bhavan today… even though we don’t have any Bills to pass in this Assembly session, we do have to conduct them each year as per the law. We have, in earlier sessions, passed the necessary Bills,” she said.

“Nonetheless, I met the Governor and apprised him of the two finance Bills that may come up in the House. We will discuss them when it is brought up in the Assembly. As long as the Governor hasn’t passed a certain Bill, we generally do not discuss them in public. It is the decorum we follow,” the chief minister added.

Looking cheerful, she said: “I had a cup of milk tea, but did not eat biscuits.”

Banerjee said no discussion was held with the Governor over the appointment of the vice-chancellors of state-run universities.

On the BJP planning to move two adjournment motions in the Assembly seeking discussion on violence during panchayat polls, she said Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay would look into it.
This was the first meeting between the two after a gap of six months.

In the past few weeks, the relations between the TMC government and the Raj Bhavan turned acrimonious over the violence during the panchayat elections with a war of words between the chief minister and the Governor.

The Governor accused the State Election Commissioner Rajiva Sinha of failing in discharging his duties and opened a ‘Peace Home’ at the Raj Bhavan to address the complaints of the people affected by violence during the panchayat polls.

He also visited violence-hit areas in South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Cooch Behar and other districts, inviting criticism from the TMC and ministers.
