In a gesture to humiliate the Left,the Trinamool Congress plans to evoke the martyrs of socio-political agitations of the 40s and 70s,apart from those of Nandigram and Singur.

The Opposition party has not only felicitated the victims and survivors of Morichjhanpi,but plans to initiate an agitation to bring them justice. This,after she stole a march from the CPM by hijacking the cause of victims of Tebhaga agitation and food agitation and felicitating them as martyrs.

In Morichjhanpi,refugees from Bangladesh who took shelter in Bengal were fired upon by the police and driven out during the chief ministership of Jyoti Basu in 1979.

We have not only felicitated the survivors of Morichjhanpi as martyrs but we have demanded an inquiry into the incident and justice for the victims. There will be a statewide agitation for this cause, said Jyotipriyo Mullick,senior Trinamool leader.

Last Sunday,as the CPM organised a condolence meet for the late Communist leader at Shahid Minar,Trinamool Congress organised a parallel rally at Barasat,North 24-Parganas and felicitated around 20 survivors of Morichjhanpi. During the rally the Trinamool demanded a fresh investigation into what happened in 1979. The party is now organising the survivors and victims of Morichjhanpi who have now settled in Kodombogachi in Barasat.

The aims to achieve twin objectives. Firstly,to highlight the dark side of Basus rule,thus improving its position to combat CPMs move to regain ground using Basu sentiments. Secondly,to highlight the alleged atrocities of the Left rule in Bengal.
