The Left Front today strongly criticised the state government for its “unilateral approach” and “acting in haste” over the tripartite Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) pact, which was signed today at Pintail village near Sukna.

Earlier,CPM leader and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Suryakanta Mishra had declined the government’s offer to attend the pact signing ceremony. He had also accused the government of being ‘undemocratic’ in resolving the issue.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose today said the whole process was undemocratic. “There was no discussion at the Assembly,no involvement of political parties in the whole process,” he said, adding the Opposition had been kept in dark.

Referring to the signing of the 1988 Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council Agreement,he said the Left Front government had then put across the agreement in the Assembly for discussion. “We had several meetings, debates and discussions over the treaty with all parties and a consensus was reached. But the present government did not find it suitable even to convene an all-party meet on the issue,” added Bose.

He said the pact may stoke violence in North Bengal. He said the GTA pact had no official support from people of Darjeeling or other areas. Bose said the Left Front favoured a peaceful solution to the issue but not at the cost of division of the state. He said full details of the pact should be made public.
