Kolkata/behrampore: A Behrampore court today granted reprieve to Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in connection with a murder case. Chowdhury had moved the court Wednesday praying that he not be arrested till the hearing of his bail petition pending before it.
Vacation judge Siddhartha Kanjilal granted the interim bail till October 29 when the case would be heard.
A non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against Chowdhury by additional chief judicial magistrate court on September 27 for alleged conspiracy in the murder of Trinamool Congress worker Kamal Sheikh in Golbazar area of Murshidabad district in 2011.
The minister was charge-sheeted on September 25,but Chowdhury had appealed on October 1 that the case against him was false.
On October 3,Chowdhurys petition that the hearing be advanced to an earlier date was turned down.
Earlier,top state Congress leadership comprising 23 MLAs,14 of whom were from Murshidabad,demonstrated at Rani Rashmoni Square in central Kolkata against the arrest warrant issued to state Rail minister Adhir Chowdhury.
Among those present in the demonstration were Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmad Khan,MP and son of President Abhijit Mukherjee,MP Mannan Hossain,senior Congress leader Manas Bhuniya and state Congress president Pradeep Bhattacharya.
Later,the leaders submitted a memorandum to the Governor.
The conspiracy has been hatched from the Writers, state Congress president Bhattacharya said,adding they have mentioned in the memorandum that the police had said Adhir was absconding for over two years whereas he had been visiting his Murshidabad and Behrampore office during that time.
Bhattacharya said they will take out a rally Behrampore Chalo on October 27. ens & pti
Will take action against SP: Adhir
KOLKATA: State Rail minister Adhir Chowdhury said he will take legal action against the Murshidabad SP (Humayun Kabir). “They have fabricated a case against me. The SP had written that I was absconding for the last two and a half years whereas for the last one and a half years,I have been a minister after taking an oath from the President of India. I will definitely take legal steps against him,” he told The Indian Express over the phone. ens
