During her first visit to Lalgarh as Chief Minister,Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday sent out a stern message to Maoists and their sympathisers, saying the politics of bloodshed would never be tolerated in any part of the state.

Addressing a rally, she advised the people of Lalgarh, which was the Maoist heartland till a few months ago,to keep a close watch on “strangers” visiting with any “agenda”. She also came down heavily on the CPM and even alleged that those involved in firing at Netai village, which claimed nine lives, were “now in the Maoists’ shelter”.

“If required I would lay down my life in fight against politics of bloodshed. But I would not allow blood to spill in West Bengal again,” she said.

Attacking the Maoists, she said: “They loot money… for their own interest. They never serve the interest of the poor. They only use the poor. They are coward. They do not have faith in democracy for which they take up arms. If one has to take up arms,it should be done to protect the country.”

She cautioned the Maoists’ sympathisers, saying: “Those giving statements from Kolkata in favour of the Maoists should think again. Please don’t support them.”

On August 9,2010,Mamata had addressed a rally here under the forum of a rights group and demanded a judicial probe into the killing of top Maoist leader Azad. She also demanded withdrawal of joint forces from West Bengal, alleging that they were terrorising the people. This time, however, she did not say anything about the activities of the joint force.

Addressing the rally which was attended by not more than 2,000 people, the Chief Minister said: “The soil of Midnapore is sacred and courageous people were born here. I will not allow bloodshed here. Terrorism has no place here.”

She said those who hace surrendered will be given protection by her government. “The government will also do something for those who would fight for the protection of villages,” she said.

With an eye on the upcoming panchayat polls, she also announced a slew of projects in a clear attempt to strengthen her party’s grip over the tribal zone.
