Pulin Baske,the CPM MP from Jhargram,has written to Prime Minister urging him to “dissuade the Railway Minister to desist from the disastrous course she has chosen to pursue” to go ahead with the August 9 rally. He said the rally was “clearly aimed to shore up the falling morale of the Maoists.”

For Cong,PCAPA is not a banned outfit
The Congress sees no harm in PCAPA’s joining the rally. “The PCPA has not been declared a banned organisation by the West Bengal government. Prohibitory orders are being withdrawn from Lalgarh. If anybody attends the meeting why should there be any controversy?” said state Congress chief Manas Bhuniya on Thursday. The Congress party,he said,would however skip the rally as it has not been invited. “She (Mamata Banerjee) is going to Lalgarh to restore peace and democracy. Our best wishes are with her,” he added.

CBI probe into Tagore Nobel medal theft closed

Bolpur: The five-year probe by the CBI into the theft of Rabindranath Tagore’s Nobel medal and other memorabilia from Rabindra Bhavan museum in Santiniketan,was officially closed on Thursday. The ACJM of Bolpur,T N Bhakat,accepted CBI’s plea of closing the investigation. The court’s move comes after CBI,Kolkata,wrote to the court on August 20,2009,saying,“We are not progressing with the probe”. The theft of the medallion and 47 other pieces of memorabilia came to light on March 25,2004.

Biman ticks off comrades celebrating Basu anniversary
The Left Front chairman of Bengal,Biman Bose,on Thursday took on a section of his party leaders who has been celebrating birthdays of Jyoti Basu and Subhas Chakraborty. He said,for an exception,the party has been celebrating his birthday since 1963. Except Mazaffar Ahmed,the founder member of the CPM,the party does not approve any such ‘personality cult’ for any other leader.

Junior docs at Nil Ratan call off strike
The strike called by junior doctors at Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College demanding more security was called off on Thursday. The doctors were demanding security in the hospital as well as in the hostel after they were assaulted by relatives of one Abdul,who died in the hospital. His relatives have been arrested.
