A day after Samajwadi Party candidate from Howrah Vijay Upadhyay was allegedly assaulted by miscreants near Foreshore Road, the party on Wednesday said that it has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission.

“On Tuesday my brother went to campaign in the area with cricketer Manoj Tewary. On his way back, when he was alone, some miscreants stopped his car near Foreshore Road. They damaged his car and dragged him out and beat him up. He received injuries on his head and hand,” said Upadhyay’s brother Vinay.

However state Chief Electoral Officer Debashis Sen said the EC is yet to receive any complaint. “I have just read about the incident in the newspapers but we have not received any complaint till now,” Sen told The Indian Express.

Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh, meanwhile, made a visit to the hospital where Upadhyay is recuperating. Upadhyay is also the state unit president of the party. Howrah goes to polls on Thursday.
