Goat bank politics to woo tribals

The government began distribution of poultry and goats among the tribals in Lalgarh on Tuesday. The distribution will continue in the Pirakata and Binpur areas till Wednesday.

This was stated by R D Meena,Principal Secretary,Backwards Class Welfare Department,who and seven of his colleagues are camping in the area since Monday.

Meena said that an information desk has been set up at the office of Lalgarh BDO where residents would get information on loans and various schemes launched by the state government for the development of the area. The government will also revive 59 self-help groups which have been lying defunct,Meena added.

The CPI-ML (Liberation),meanwhile,alleged that police were indiscriminately arresting tribal youths from Lalgarh and adjoining areas and are branding them as Maoists. Demanding an “immediate stop” to the police operation there,the outfit extended support to the 24-hour bandh called by People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities in West Midnapore,Bankura and Purulia districts on Wednesday against the alleged police torture. “The police terror is total in Lalgarh and the adjoining areas of Janagalmahal. Section 144 of the CrPC has been clamped to block the passage to Lalgarh,” the party said in a statement.
