The Calcutta High Court on Monday directed the Alipore district judge and the chief judicial magistrate of South-24 Parganas to file a report on the current status of the AMRI Hospital fire case within seven days.
Anirudha Roy Chowdhury, who had lost a relative in the fire that took place on December 9,2011,has filed a writ petition in the high court alleging that though the chargesheet was filed long ago,the trial of case is yet to begin.
It added that the directors of AMRI,who are the accused in the case, had visited abroad several times as a result the trial is being delayed. A special court be set up to hold the trial, the petition demanded.
On December 9,2011 a devastating fire had broken out at AMRI in south Kolkata. A total of 90 patients and two nurses were choked to death.
The Kolkata police lodged a FIR against the director and some employees of the hospital and filed a chargesheet on March 1,2012. The chargesheet was filed against 12 directors of AMRI and other four hospital employees.
The 1,300-page chargesheet accused the director and the employees of the hospital of negligence that led to the fire.
According to the current status of the case, the chargesheet is yet to be forwarded to the session court. It is lying with the Alipore chief judicial magistrate court, said a counsel of the accused.
