Few takers for maths in Presidency

Nearly two weeks after the admission process in colleges of the Calcutta University (CU) is over, the Presidency College is scouting for students to fill seats in the mathematics department.

Over a dozen seats in the department are vacant and the college has written to the undergraduate council of the CU over the matter.

University officials confirmed they received a letter from the college. The last day for admission to any college of the university was July 31. The students, however, can change their streams by August 28.

Over 100 students have left the Presidency College this year to get admission in other institutes. In an unusual step, the college conducted the second round of counselling to fill up the seats. But even after the second round of counselling some seats were left vacant and the college is still keen to fill these seats. The college authorities say while other colleges have switched over to the semester system, the Presidency College still follows the older system, prompting the students moving away from its courses.

College students also blame the poor show by some students of the college in the last few years. About 15 students failed in the BA/BSc final year examinations this year while 10 students had failed last year.
