Engineering student nabbed for acid attack

The FIR further says the victim was alone at her home on Thursday when Ayan, whom she knew for nearly six months, knocked on the door. As soon as she opened the door, the youth threw acid on her face and fled. The victim was later admitted to Burdwan Medical College Hospital.

In her statement to police, the victim said she became friends with Ayan through a social networking site nearly six months ago. The engineering student proposed her marriage, which she refused. Since then, she claimed, Ayan has been after her.

The victim’s brother further said that the victim had stopped speaking to Ayan nearly four months ago. “After my sister took his name, we tried to call him, but his phone was switched off. He had also removed his Facebook profile,” he said.

Abdul Gaffar, Inspector In-charge , Burdwan Police station, said, “We have arrested Ayan from Baronilpur in Burdwan. He was a resident of Salanpur earlier. The victim took his name in her complaint and we too probed the case. We could nab him
after tracking his cellphone for 12 hours.”

Sikha Aditya, member of state women commission visited the victim on Friday. “We will report everything to the government and request for a stringent law against acid sale. There is a ruling by SC on this issue too. And we have requested police to take action against the culprits,” she said.

Ayan, however, has denied all charges and said he was framed by the family members of the victim.
