The law and order situation being the greatest hurdle to peaceful elections in the state, the Chief Electoral Officer held a meeting.

The law and order situation being the greatest hurdle to peaceful elections in the state, the Chief Electoral Officer held a meeting on Thursday to review the preparedness of Electoral officers.

The meeting was attended by with 12 Magistrates and District Electoral Officers (DEOs) of South Bengal districts and Kolkata. The immediate action to be taken on the violation of the Model Code of Conduct, imposed on government offices, candidates and political parties from March 1,were also discussed.

“We have asked the state police and Kolkata police to submit daily reports,as the situation in many areas is still disturbed,” said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sunil Gupta.

In a day-long meeting with DMs,ADMs and DEOs,officials of the Election Commission discussed issues like the preparation of final electoral rolls and voter lists, polling stations, deployment of electoral officers at polling stations, stationery and vehicles required for election, law and order situation, expenditure monitoring and handling of complaints on Model Code violation.

“We are satisfied with the poll arrangements by the Electoral officers,” said Gupta. “But we have received specific complaints on Model Code violation. We are probing them and if the complaints are proven correct,we will register an FIR against the accused.” He,however, refused to elaborate on the course of action against the three Left Front ministers who allegedly violated the Model Code.

On March 1,Finance minister Asim Dasgupta had allegedly signed some papers,Environment minister Sailen Sarkar was seen distributing cycles at Malda and Tourism minister Manab Mukherjee was using red beacon car despite the EC ban.

“We have discussed the violation in the meeting,” said Gupta. “Complaints will be filed online and thereafter, electoral officers will have to decide how they tackle the issues.”
