In these times the when there are magazines being launched dime-a-dozen,here is one magazine that dares to be different. Look East ,a magazine launched by a senior Kolkata-based journalist Subhra Kanti Gupta, does not claim to be different; it is different. For one,the magazine will focus entirely on East – both East India and the Eastern neighbours.

“The basic idea is to focus on a region which is being ignored by the mainstream media. Every day there are plenty of reports on Kashmir,Afghanistan,Pakistan,Maharashtra but when was the last time that one really read about a report on Bangladesh or even Burma?,” says Gupta, who is the editor and the publisher of the magazine. So the magazine will highlight on issues relating to problems in the region, concentrating mainly on security and strategic importance.

The first issue looks at the Maoist problem affecting the Indian states and examines if the Maoists are in reality betraying their cause?

“How many cases has a person heard of the Tata and the Birlas being targeted by the Maoist? They do not target them as they are paid off by the big corporate houses. So who are the class enemy and who are they really fighting for,” he says. In the next issues,Gupta says they plan to highlight the Bangladesh liberation war of 1971. With 18 contributors,Gupta says the magazine will bridge the gap between journalism and those in academia with in-depth analyses from both the sides. Each issue,he says, will deal with one particular topic. Ironically he says, while the army and the military forces have shown an interest in stocking the magazine,he is now getting ready to fight another battle – against the bigger magazines that dominate most of the stalls.
