The power situation in the state continues to be grim with the state today suffering a shortfall of nearly 450 MW of power.
Most of the districts today suffered power cuts for almost two hours, with the hot and humid day making the situation worse. Even the state capital was not spared as many places like Salt Lake,Behala and Shovabazar faced an hour-long power cut.
According to CESC officials, the present crisis is due to a decline in power generation. The power situation has been particularly bad for the last one week with a daily shortfall of 50 to 100 MW, said a senior CESC official. The CESC has been making efforts to buy power from other states.
The main reason behind the frequent power cuts is the tiff between Eastern Coalfields (ECL) and West Bengal Power Distribution Corporation Limited (WBPDCL),with the latter owing the former over a hundred crore as dues.
The WBPDCL,however, has been blaming ECL for low coal supply.
Damayanti Roy,a resident of Shovabazar, said: We have been facing hour-long power cuts for the last one week and today the heat made the situation worse.
One can understand power cuts in summer, but in October the demand is much lower, added Roy.
