A CPM delegation Saturday submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commission (SEC),alleging that the poll panel was not successful in controlling violence and booth capturing. The CPM leaders have also claimed that inadequate central forces was deployed in North 24-Parganas,South 24-Parganas and Howrah for the third phase of the panchayat elections. We have to say that the commission is not successful in conducting elections peacefully. It could not even control the deployment of central forces. In the polling booths of the three districts that went to the polls in the third phase, there was no deployment of central forces. Hundreds and thousands of booths were captured and the poll day was market by violent clashes and deaths, said CPM state committee member Robin Deb. He alleged that the ruling party was up in arms against political opponents in the districts and was resorting to violence, intimidation and terror to secure votes. The commission has to be more vigilant. We have urged the commission to be more cautious in force deployment and in monitoring peaceful holding of panchayat polls in the next two phases, he pointed out. Moreover, the commission officials have also said that central forces cannot be deployed during repoll,Deb added.
