Kali Prasad Jhunjhunwala is the owner of a rubber products industry in central Kolkata. He has been practising yoga for the past 20 years having learnt the ropes from various camps organised by the Bihar Institute of Yoga.

Every Sunday he makes his way to Pyara Bagan where he has arranged for a yoga class for 100 slum children. Though he faces a real challenge to gather those 100 children for each and every class,he is optimistic about his mission in life and hence works endlessly towards accomplishing it.

Jhunjhunwala believes crimes come easy to slum kids and that they come at an early stage in life. With less motivation from their parents who themselves suffer from financial insecurity, they see no good in practising yoga.

So Jhunjhunwala visits several such families, talks to the parents and tries to convince them about the good effects of yoga in life. He strongly advocates that yoga develops a positive attitude towards life. So he tries to focus on these weaker sections of the society to inculcate in them the concepts of discipline, concentation and awareness.

Jhunjhunwala says,“It’s a humble beginning. I have to make a lot of arrangements for these kids”. At present he is only able to arrange for a Sunday breakfast after the yoga classes get over for these children free of cost.

Recently he held a 12-day free yoga camp for children at Lions Safari Park,Southern Avenue from May 18 to May 29.

The classes usually begin with Shanti mantra to establish a bond between the teacher and the taught. To make the classes interesting for the children he has also named the asanas after different animals depending on the postures they make while performing. He performs Butterfly asana,Shasank asana (named as rabbit asana),Bhujanga asana (named as snake asana).

Jhunjhunwala also makes the children perform the Jalneti asana to cleanse their respiratory system and then comes the Brahmri or pranayam asana. At the end he makes them chant the Gayatri mantra and the class ends with Shanti Path, which includes humming kirtans.

Jhunjhunwala belives in the dictum,“Yoga from door-to-door and shore-to-shore”. As yoga not only keeps one physically fit,it renders an all-round development in children. His focus is basically on children as they are the building blocks of a nation.

“Children are lovable. And it’s fun to work with them. They are very receptive. It is easy to mould them in a better way,” he says

Jhunjhunwala believes yoga does not mean merely doing certain exercises… rather yoga enhances one’s helpful attitude towards others.
