Bus mows down man

A 51-year-old man was run over by a speeding bus when the vehicle tried to overtake another bus at Moulali crossing on Thursday.

A 51-year-old man was run over by a speeding bus when the vehicle tried to overtake another bus at Moulali crossing on Thursday.

According to police,Biman Roy,a resident of Beliaghata,was crossing Moulali crossing when a minibus while trying to overtake another bus mowed him down.

Roy,an employee of Moulali Yuva Kendra,was rushed to NRS Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The police are searching for the driver of the bus who is absconding.

With the rising number of road accidents,the traffic department of Kolkata police has identified 33 vulnerable and dangerous crossings across the city which they intend to monitor more strictly.

Among those identified are Strand Road,Old Court House Street,Dufferin Street,Rippon Street,Howrah Bridge and CIT Road. Police believe it is easier to break traffic rules at these spots.

“From Friday,we will deploy five extra mobile vans,which will have seven members. They will conduct surprise checks,” said Dilip Bandopadhyay DC Traffic.
