Three arrested in college clash case
The Kolkata police produced Sheikh Mukhtar and three of his associates in the Alipore court on Wednesday in connection with the student clash that had left six students injured at Hari Mohan Ghosh College on January 7.
Mukhtar along with three of his associates Ismail alias Gabbar,Aftar and Javed alias Nanhe were arrested from Garden Reach last night on charges of using illegal weapons,attempt to murder and injuring police personnel.
The court of Sanjeev Dutta remanded the trio to police custody till January 27,even as public prosecutor,Satyambrata Chowdhury had appealed for a 14-day remand.
What started as a clash between supporters of the Trinamool Congress and the Student Federation of India soon snowballed into a political battle,which had necessitated the deployment of RAF and Combat forces to pacify the situation. The local student wing of the Trinamool accused CPM henchman Sheikh Mukhtar of being the conspirator in the clash.
New ward for elderly at SSKM
The SSKM Hospital has decided to open a new geriatric ward to cater to the elderly. The hospital would be the first government hospital in the city to open such a unit. There has been a change in the demography in the last few years and the number of older people has gone up as have their life expectancy, said Debashish Bhattacharya,Medical Superintendent of SSKM. According to hospital officials,it would be a while before the department would open as it is still under construction.
