Tension prevailed in Kakurgachi in north Kolkata after a police officer from Phoolbagan police station allegedly beat up a man for refusing to give a bribe.
Rajmohan Jha (27) was at a petrol pump for buying fuel when a sub-inspector approached him. I was filling gas in my vehicle when the officer asked me to hand over my licence. When I refused,he said if I gave him Rs 100,he would let me go or else I will have to shell out a huge amount to get back my licence and the vehicle back from the police station. When I did not budge,he knocked me down and started beating me up, said Jha.
Witnessing the incident,a group of irate locals ransacked the petrol pump and thrashed the police officer. A team from the local police station reached the spot soon and started thrashing the mob.
The incident triggered tension in the area and the mob blocked the road for an hour.
Joint Commissioner of Police Jawed Shamim said,We are looking into the matter. If needed, there will be an inquiry and action will be taken against the officer. Jha has filed a complaint with the Phoolbagan police station against the sub-inspector.
