A day after Congress stalwart Pranab Mukharjee reeled off facts and figure to back his allegation that the Left Front had done little to implement Central schemes in the state, the CPM today hit back with its own facts but avoided personal criticism of the external affairs minister, saying he had been given “wrong data”.

Leading the charge was Left Front chairman Biman Bose, who said the “wrong data” presented by Mukherjee was not prepared by him but forwarded by someone else. “He said all this under political compulsions. Someone has forced him to do so,” Bose said at a press meet at the CPM’s headquarters on at Alimuddin Street on Monday.

Mukherjee had alleged that the Left Front government has failed in all its social developmental programmes, starting from education, health to implementing Centrally-sponsored social schemes. He had pointed out that the drop-out rate in West Bengal is a glaring example of its failure. He said that malnutrition and hunger is also high in Bengal compared to other major states.

Citing statistics,Mukherjee also alleged that the Bengal government had failed to spend Rs 357.13 crore meant for urban health. He also said that Murshidabad district is the poorest in the entire nation.

The Congress veteran said of the 100 poorest districts in the nation,Bengal alone has 14. “These are all lies. The conspiracy of lies against us is nothing new and it will continue. In agriculture and industry, where our nation is slipping back,Bengal is surging ahead. But he should have avoided such comments,” Bose said.
