Bengal to augment power in state using renewable energy

“So far,only two per cent of the total energy requirement is met by alternative energy in the state and 95 per cent of energy comes from thermal power,” said S P Gonchoudhury,MD,West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation (WBGEDC),which is the nodal agency for generation of power from alternative sources of power in the state.

Gonchoudhury said that the state government is set to add about 65 MW power from renewable energy sources in the next one year. On the total power generation capacity from alternative sources,the potential of renewable energy is about 80 MW.

The projects in the pipeline include a 10-MW Solar Photo Voltaic Power Plant of Videocon at Raghunathgunj in Purulia,a 5-MW Solar Power Plant by Aston Field in Bankura and a 10-MW Power Plant by Amrit group.

Another wind-based power plant in East Midnapore by Suzlon,an international firm harnessing wind energy,is expected to have an installed capacity of 40 MW. Last year,a solar power plant of 2-MW capacity was inaugurated at Jamuria. Recently,a 3-MW power plant,fuelled by wind energy,was inaugurated at Frasergunj in South 24-Parganas.
