Workers remove an uprooted tree after a storm in Dakshin Dinajpur district on Friday. PTI The Alipore weather department Friday said that West Bengal was safe from Cyclone Mocha but warned against a heatwave. The weather officials said temperatures are likely to soar across the state for the next five days.
While the maximum temperature in Kolkata had been ranging between 38 and 39 degrees Celsius for the past three days, the Alipore weather department said that mercury levels are likely to cross 40 degrees Celsius in the state capital. On Tuesday, 12 districts had recorded a maximum temperature of over 40°C.
The weather department officials said there was a possibility of rain in eight districts, including Kolkata, Saturday onwards.
Meanwhile, humidity levels also increased across the state as the formation of low pressure over the Bay of Bengal prevented moisture from entering the coast. Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director G K Das said, “We can expect mild to moderate thunderstorms only after the cyclone makes landfall. It won’t reduce the temperature immediately though.”
Quelling fears about the Cyclone Mocha, the Alipore weather department said, “There was no chance of the cyclone hitting West Bengal.”
“On Saturday, South and North 24 Parganas, Medinipur and Jhargram districts will receive wind at a speed of 30-40 km/ph along with thunderstorms. One can expect rain in Howrah and Hooghly region as well.
South 24 Parganas will receive rain by next Tuesday. In Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly districts, the mercury levels will go down only from Monday,” the weather department said.
While Bangladesh and Myanmar have started their coastal evacuation protocols in the wake of the warning issued about the Cyclone Mocha, the Indian Meteorological Department said the impact on West Bengal would not
be severe.
